Type 2 diabetes shortens women’s lives by an average of five years, research shows

The disease shortens their lives by an average of five years, six months more than for male peers – and this triples to 15 years for smokers.

A female with type 2 diabetes has a 60 percent greater chance of early death than the average person, findings in Diabetologia suggest.

Lead author Dr Adrian Heald, of Salford Royal Hospital, said: “Our modelling suggests type 2 diabetes has a greater effect on life expectancy of women, smokers and those diagnosed at a younger age.”
